The GT3-R based on the 911 GT3, is powered by a water cooled Porsche F6 4v DOHC of 3600 cc; transmission is a manual G96/61 six speed cable controlled. According to the 2002 ACO/FIA Regulations, front nose and tail section, front fenders, front and rear hood, fender flares, rear tail and lid are carbon Kevlar, aerodynamically optimized. Doors, side and rear windows are made of plastic. The total weight is approx. 1100 Kg as per Le Mans regulations.
Owned by the German RWS Motorsport, two GT3-R have been entered to the 40th Daytona 24 Hours, year 2002. Car no. 9 in GT class and car no. 7, subject of this article, in GTS class. Driven by Riccitelli (Italy), Quester (Austria), Vosse (Belgium) and Said (USA) the car had no particular success in this race: 28th on the grid, did not finish because of an engine failure after 404 laps. The yet stunning standard Red Bull livery, at Daytona, has been improved with a big American flag painted from the front fender across the roof up to the rear fender.
The result showed below, is a mix of Tamiya 1/24 Porsche 911 GT3, Scale Production GT3-R transkit, Quik Skins BMW M3 Gtr wheels, Scale Production and Carpena Red Bull decals sets.
The Tamiya GT3 is a curbside model, lovely as usual, with the exception of the doors fenders (definitely oversized), taillights and headlights in the area of the turn signals (too simplified).
Since nearly three years, Scale Production have been selling very fine transkits for the racing versions of the 911: the GT3 Cup and the GT3-R, subject of this article. The transkit comprises front bumper, rear wing, rear glass made from acetate, turned aluminium fire extinguisher, turned aluminium air jacks, disc brakes, front and rear fenders, cockpit, door panels, dashboard, roll cage, racing seat, racing shift lever, steering wheel, electronic boxes, BBS 18” wheels made of aluminium and resin, rubber tires, a piece of wire mesh, a small frame of photo-etched parts and a few but important small decals for the cockpit. Also provided, a dozen of precious pictures of the Red Bull car and a standard instructions sheet.
Lower and upper arms, front and rear suspensions, exhausts, have been assembled and painted according to the instructions from step 1 to step 5 included, with the exception of the brake discs. The GT3 kit features a separate nose so, no dangerous cut is necessary.
