This articles aims at sharing with the reader, the work accomplished to build a model of the F-5A on service of the Spanish army of the air, using the old kit from Classic Airframes. This is not a kit for novices, in fact, I had to make many modifications and scratch, the fit of resin parts provided is not good and needs a lot of work to get an acceptable result. As always when I finish a model based on certain kit, appears a better one, anyway, I’m satisfied with the final result.

Construction

The cockpit

As I said before, the cockpit was reproduced in resin and before gluing it to the fuselage, it needed a lot of dryfitting, sanding down the necessary; otherwise, it would not fit correctly. The only license I took was not to replace the seat and harnesses provided with the kit to save work (the ones in the Spanish aircraft were different).

Once the cockpit was built, I started the painting process applying a medium grey coat. Then, I lightened the center of the panels with pure white (it doesn’t matter the contrast since it will soon disappear), next, I airbrushed dark grey on the recesses and corner edges to give more depth to the whole. Once everything was dry, I hand painted the details using Vallejo paints, the seat cushion was painted green, the headrest reddish brown, the consoles matt black and the details, white.
Finally, I gave an oil wash very well diluted and several drops of ceramic varnish in the center of the dials.
