Tamiya have recently introduced into the market two kits showing a different decoration belonging to the Japanese Grand Touring Championship based on the Lexus SC 430.

Almost immediately after opening the box, I realized it supplies few parts but with the usual Tamiya fit, excellent!

This kit supplies a pre-painted semi-gloss black die-cast underpanel for added weight and realism once the model is finished.

Also and for even more detail, I used the Tune up # 12617 SC430 Photo-Etched Parts Set (sold separately) which from my point of view leaves much to be desire with some missing details like the windshield wiper.

The metal transfers for mirror surfaces and manufacturer emblems for extra highlights are really good as well as the clear window parts featuring black masking stickers to recreate tinted effect. A nylon mesh is included for the front air duct.

A weak point is the body color. As you can appreciate, the car has two colors, and the red one is the problem. According to instructions, the lower of the vehicle should be spraypainted TS49 and the upper red surface will be decaled, obviously, here’s when doubt arises: Will the color match up exactly? The answer’s NO, though I have to say that there’s a subtle difference, the result is acceptable.

Prior to proceeding, I made some tests, and I got the best result by priming white, then painting red, masking, painting with silver and applying the decals later. Nevertheless, the decals tend more toward orange.

Another solution is to paint yellow after the white primer repeating the above process again, but without painting the silver and then, painting red.
