Tamiya offers us a prototype version of 1945 that had been manufactured before being mass produced, this vehicle had been revealed during the 1945 victory parade in Berlin, and shocked Western military authorities. As these vehicles saw nearly no action, I decided to base my model on a version of the 1946 production, recreating the atmosphere during the Hungarian uprising in 1956.

To improve the kit, I used the Eduard PE set (ref.35136) which allows us either to improve the basic kit (mod. 1945) or to make an upgrade to represent a 1946 version. Around the 80% of the parts were used.

I followed the assembly instructions as far as possible, except for those appropriate improvements to superdetail the kit.

One of the weakest point in this Tamiya kit, is that no sponsons floors are provided. Although it’s not a difficult problem to solve, I think that nowadays this kind of mistake should not be made. Another error of this kit, is that you’ll have to move the supplementary fuel tanks 3 mm backwards, if not the turret would not rotate freely.

Assembly

The sponsons floors were made with (4 mm) plasticard.

I added 3 covers per side for the tool boxes from the Eduard set. This is one of the appreciable differences between the Tamiya kit and the 1946 model.
