In 1991 Mazda became the first Japanese manufacturer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Mazda was also the only that produced rotary engines for competition use. Tamiya have offered the 787B chassis #002 in its 1991 Le Mans “Charge” livery.

The kit of this article is a reissue of the white 787 and 787B that competed at Le Mans in 1991. Note that #18 is 787B chassis 001, whilst #56 is 787 chassis 002. The 18 finished 6th and 56 finished 8th overall at the 1991 Le Mans race.

Construction

Body

As I usually do with my models I started with the body. I first sanded the thin raised lines that would have been used to help painting the previous kit with the Charge livery. Once they were removed, I sanded the entire body with #1200 and washed carefully. Next I applied several thin coats from decanted Tamiya white primer. It’s a must have to correctly dilute paint with Tamiya X-20.
Next step was to sand the priming with #1200 and then #1500.

Then after being washed, I applied several thin coats fo TZ-26 White and once it cured, sanded again with #1500 to even the surface and remove any dust coming from the airbrushing.

Next step was to apply the decals, you should pay special attention when centering the blue decals (#3) there’s no way to correct them later. I made the mistake of separating the decal in two halves to make the application easier but this made very difficult the alignment.
