The Honda RC166 is the first historical racing bike of the 60’s that Tamiya ever made. This era of racing was full of technical innovations and so the RC166 is a 250cc 6 cylinder 4 stroke engine with 4 valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts.

The kit comprises all parts necessary to build a decent kit including screws, wiring and some etched parts.

Besides that Tamiya is also offering in total 4 detail sets: Front Fork, Wheel, Rivet and Chain sets which I will describe during the build.

1/12 Tamiya Honda RC166 Metal Chain Set

1/12 Tamiya Honda RC166 Wheel Set

1/12 Tamiya Honda RC166 Clutch & Front Fork Set

1/12 Tamiya Honda RC166 Rivet Set

Building

I started the build with the engine following the instructions. Prior to start painting, the parts that that will be painted the same color were assembled so as to get strong glue joints. Nearly all parts of steps 1 to 3 were configured to subassemblies, only the cylinder parts remained on the sprues to ensure all areas of the cooling ribs would be covered with paint. Contrary to the kit instruction the “silver” parts were painted Gunze Mr.Color Super Metallic super fine silver (SM01) instead of TS17 mainly because I like to use airbrush over spray cans.
