These new vehicles, designated StuH 42 (Sturmhaubitze 42, Sd.Kfz 142/2), were designed to provide infantry support with the increased number of StuG III Ausf. F/8 and Ausf. Gs being used in the anti-tank role. The StuH 42 mounted a variant of the 10.5 cm leFH 18 howitzer, modified to be electrically fired and fitted with a muzzle brake. Later models were built from StuG III Ausf. G chassis as well as StuG III Ausf. F and Ausf. F/8 chassis. 1,210 StuH 42 were produced from October 1942 to 1945.

El Dragon #6454 kit

The kit has excellent details such as:

The pre-covered zimmerit included in all proper places, even on the chassis has such a natural, uneven appearance and certainly looks like the real thing.

The running gear that allows to place the wheels in different positions (at different heights)

PE grilles for the engine vents, upper ones as well as the rear one. PE parts also for the interior of the idler wheels and mudguards reinforcements.

Periscopes made out of clear styrene.

Hull parts zimmerit free in case you decided to build a different version

The fenders look great and the tread pattern is exquisitely molded into both the upper and underside surfaces

The tools are excellently molded and include the brackets.

75mm gun to make a StuG III G (probably you’ll have to modify the joint between the gun an mantlet). In this case you should leave the hatches closed since the barrel interior doesn’t correspond to the 7,5cm but to the 10,5 cm (especially the breech block ). The other option could be using spare parts to replace the useless ones.

Magic Tracks: Individual track links are molded in slightly darker gray plastic, provided in the kit and are bagged separately as they are either left or right handed.

Parts to detail the fighting compartment including two radio equipments to make a StuG III command version.

Here I think Dragon made a mistake since there was no StuH42 command version. This was easily solved not placing the second radio and its antenna. Unfortunately I discover this after I had detailed the interior.

The detail on the wheels looks absolutely amazing. You can clearly see the raised lettering on the road wheels spelling out “Continentau” though the tyres manufacturer in kwon as “Continental” The return rollers also have the “Continentau” embossing but this is more over scale.

Complaints of the kit

The fender supports are not correct for this vehicle. There are several different styles of fender support brackets which varied from manufacturer to manufacturer of the StuG and StuH. The StuH 42 with and without waffle zimmerit was produced by Alkett, however the fender supports in the kit are those that would have been found on vehicles produced by MIAG.

The welds between the engine deck and the hull sides should be interlocking and not straight.. After looking at reference photos and comparing the weld seams, the kit is incorrect. Even with the waffle zimmerit the interlocking welds can be seen in my reference photos.

At least two of the three painting schemes suggested are wrong. Apparently, Dragon based on the pictures of the StuG III G for the 202 and 304 vehicles.

Dragon don’t provide the cast mantlet which appears in most pictures od the StuH with zimmerit waffle pattern (you can use one the kit provides 9058)

The kit doesn’t provide the schürzen side plates and supports which also can be appreciated in most of the reference pictures.
