Since years I was willing to try a “fusion” among the Fujimi 911 Rsr and the Tamiya 911 GT2. I always loved this car and, since the Fujimi kit features street components instead of racing ones, the merging was mandatory.

The race

In 1995 IMSA made some important changes combining and introducing new classes. The new GTS-1 (Grand Touring Supreme 1) and GTS-2 (Grand Touring Supreme 2) classes were for both the tube-framed silhouette cars and the FIA/ACO LEMANS production-based unibody GT cars.

The new IMSA GTS classes were based on performance and not just specifications. For the new GTS-2 classes, the tube-framed cars would be an evolution of the old GTU tube-framed cars, with engines between 2.0 and 3.0 liters with a minimum weight of 1800 lbs, depending on engine types and sizes.

The first GTS-2 Porsche was the number 54 Rsr 3.8 liter driven by Lilian Bryner, Enzo Calderari, Renato Mastropietro and Ulrich Richter in 35th overall and second in GTS-2 class behind the BMW M3.

With 74 cars starting, the grid was the largest since 1980. The european Stadler Motorsport number 54 Porsche 911 Rsr team won the GTS-2 class and placed 5th overall.

The kits

As said, the project is a fusion among Fujimi 1/24 Porsche 3.8 Rsr Lm 1994 (item code 12163) and Tamiya 1/24 Taisan Starcard Porsche 911 GT2 (item code 24175).   The Fujimi Rsr kit is one of the most disappointing kit I ever bought: despite the box illustration shows the 911 that ran at Le Mans in 1994, inside there is only an approximated replica with interiors, undercarriage and wheels of the street version. From the Fujimi kit I took bodywork, wheels, windshield, headlights/taillights and front brakes air intakes. From the Tamiya I took the side mirrors, door handles and all what is laying under the body, except the wheels. Decals comes from Ricambi Model Car Products, set RD-016 allows the modeler to build the versions that ran at Daytona in 1995 and 1996. The sheet, based on UMI graphics, is very well registered and printed, sold out since years, I guess.

The process

The clumsy Fujimi bodywork needs to be refined, side skirt and rear bumper are too high. With files and sand paper I reshaped them as shown in the photos.
